Residency Match
Every medical PG aspirant wants to utter two magical words ‘I Matched!’
The most important event for your medical Career is always the day of your US Residency Match. There are many residency programs in the US for IMGs.
The process of residency match is like a bumpy journey. Let’s understand more about it.
The Match Process
Two portals commonly involved in the allotment of Residency Positions in the USA are ERAS and NRMP. Both are separate platforms with separate functions.
-----
ERAS
ERAS stands for Electronic Residency Application Service, the initial portal that you need to access to apply to residency programs. With ERAS, you can create, update, and modify your application and upload the required documents concerning the process.
In short, ERAS brings the following in sync:
· the application process
· the Residency applicant
· the authors of the LoRs for the applicant
· the applicant’s designated academic heads
· the authorities offering the Residency
It provides centralized dynamic - customizable settings for submitting your medical residency application and all your documents. Since the application process takes several months and starts as early as in med school, it helps to ideate the steps you’ll take—and their deadlines. To visit official website, click here.
Four separate programs synchronize together to form the ERAS. These are –
MyERAS
Firstly, this is a one-way portal for completing your applications and submitting documents. You can also select the appropriate residency program here. Finally, provide links to sources such as transcripts and LoR you want to install.
DWS
DWS stands for Dean’s office Workstation. The Dean here would be the authority of your Medical College who will provide your Transcripts and MSPEs. MSPE, abbreviated for Medical School Performance Evaluation, gets uploaded to our MyERAS Application.
LORP
LORP stands for Letter of Recommendation Portal. As the name suggests, this is a gateway for authorities to report you there. These letters are one of IMGs most important residence application requirements.
PDWS
Finally, this portal accesses all the above documents of the applicant from the workstation of the program director that offers a medical residency in the United States.
NRMP
NRMP or National Residency Matching Program, allocates the suitable candidate to the Residency program in the USA.
Ranking Procedure:
The NRMP uses mathematical algorithms to place applicants into residency and fellowship positions. Algorithmic research was the basis for the 2012 Nobel Prize in Economics.
How does it work? The Matching Algorithm attempts to place applicants into the most preferred choice of Rank order list. This algorithm is cyclic. Consequently, the algorithm will continue to run until both the applicants and the program’s settings match.
When does a tentative match become final? It happens when the Applicants’ Rank order list gets considered, the matching algorithm gets completed, and all provisional/tentative matchings become final and binding for training.
Match Result
In NRMP R3® (Registration, Ranking, and Results), Match Result is the end destination. You will find Match data and Result via E-mail. The NRMP results always come out on Monday of the Match Week in March. On that day, You get to know whether you get seated for a residency.
