steps to plan your clinical rotations in united states

Planning clinical rotations in the United States during Med School provides invaluable hands-on experience, exposure to various medical specialties, and the opportunity to refine clinical skills under the guidance of medical professionals.

Now, important is planning and navigating clinical rotations in the USA at the right time!

Let us understand what comes under planning:

Research about the rotations: Research available clinical rotation programs in the USA. Look for reputable hospitals, medical schools, and institutions that offer such programs.

If you are planning for Hands-on clinical rotations, then understand the difference between Inpatient and outpatient care.

Application Process:

Application forms and submit them according to the program deadlines. If you are an IMG and not belong to VSLO Accredited college then make sure that the program does accept applications without VSLO.

Visa and Legal Requirements:

Start the visa application process well in advance, as it can be time-consuming. For Indian students B1/B2 Visa is required for any clinical rotations in the USA.

Financial Planning:

You should keep in mind that all the rotations are not free. If you are considering the clinical rotations in the United States then make a list of expenses and plan your budget cautiously which includes: program fees, accommodation, living expenses, and travel.

Travel and Logistics:

Make arrangements for travel, accommodation, and other logistics well in advance. Familiarize yourself with the local area and transportation options.

The early you apply, the better you will get!

  • Lack of availability: As you know, there are few hospitals/universities that provide clinical rotations in the USA. It is highly recommended to apply early to schedule the rotations slot. Commonly the rotations applicants opens in month of March every year.

  • VISA Wait Period: India is suffering from a heavy wait list of 300+ days to get a B1B2 visa appointment. Plan your rotations 1 year in advance to overcome this.
