Complete Career Roadmap for FMGs

Career Options After FMGE (Passed & Not Passed) and Global Opportunities

ERAS 2027 Timeline

Introduction

For Indian students who earn their MBBS degree from a foreign medical university, graduation is not the endpoint - it marks the beginning of a critical transition phase. This stage involves obtaining licenses, entering the workforce, and planning long-term career growth.

For a Foreign Medical Graduate (FMG), career direction is largely determined by one factor: whether the FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination) is cleared or not.

This guide outlines the full spectrum of career possibilities for FMGs, including:

  • Steps after completing MBBS abroad
  • Career pathways after clearing FMGE
  • Options available if FMGE is not cleared
  • Medical and non-medical opportunities outside India
  • Long-term growth prospects across different routes

Starting Point for Every FMG

After completing an MBBS or equivalent primary medical qualification from a foreign institution, Indian and OCI graduates must comply with National Medical Commission (NMC) rules to practice in India. At present, passing the FMGE conducted by NBEMS is the mandatory licensing requirement.

From this stage, FMGs typically move into one of two pathways:

1. FMGE Cleared

Entry into India's medical system

2. FMGE Not Cleared

Alternative careers in India or overseas
