FAQs
A Letter of Intent does not guarantee a match, but it can reinforce professionalism, demonstrate genuine interest, and clarify ranking intentions when programs are finalizing their Rank Order Lists.
A Letter of Intent should be sent after completing most or all interviews and once you are confident in your top choice, typically a few weeks before the Rank Order List certification deadline.
The Letter of Intent should be addressed to the Program Director. You may also copy the Program Coordinator as a professional courtesy.
You should only state that a program is your number one choice if it is true. Programs value honesty, and applicants should never tell multiple programs they are ranked first.
Most Letters of Intent are concise emails of approximately 250–350 words. Clear and focused communication is preferred over lengthy explanations.
